The temporomandibular joints (TMJs)—on either side of the face—connect the lower jaw to the skull and assist in several mouth functions, including talking, yawning, smiling, chewing, etc. TMJ dysfunction occurs when these jaw joints become injured, inflamed, or strained, causing numerous unpleasant symptoms like:
TMJ pain can be due to many causes, including arthritis, stress, and jaw misalignment, but the main cause is teeth grinding (bruxism). Chronic teeth grinding and jaw clenching can strain the jaw joints and surrounding muscles, resulting in chronic discomfort.
Botox (botulinum toxin) treats temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder with a few injections into the jaw muscles. Botox injections temporarily paralyze or relax the muscles, alleviating symptoms associated with TMJ disorders, such as jaw pain, tension, and muscle spasms.
Botox treats the root cause of TMJ pain—the overactive muscles in the face and jaw—providing patients with almost immediate relief. The procedure is remarkably swift, typically finished within 15-20 minutes. Additionally, numerous patients encounter minimal to no recovery time, with only a few experiencing mild swelling at the injection site.
It’s essential to note that Botox treatment for TMJ disorders is a temporary solution. The effects typically last for a few months, requiring retreatments for sustained relief.
Although Botox effectively relieves pain, it’s not the only benefit you get from this treatment. Other benefits include:
