A straighter smile doesn’t have to come with brackets and wires. At Cosmos Dentistry in Bellevue, Washington, Dr. Tokikko Poppe offers clear aligner therapy as a modern, low-profile way to improve tooth alignment. Using advanced digital scanning and customized treatment planning, patients can gradually shift their teeth into a better position with a series of nearly invisible trays. If you’re exploring orthodontic options, the questions below can help you better understand how clear aligners work and what to expect from treatment.
Clear aligner treatment begins with detailed digital scans of your teeth, which are used to map out each stage of movement. From there, a sequence of custom trays is created to guide your teeth step by step. Each aligner is worn for a short period before progressing to the next, allowing gradual and controlled alignment improvements without the need for wire adjustments.
Clear aligners are commonly used to address spacing concerns, mild crowding, and certain bite irregularities. By applying targeted pressure over time, they can enhance both the appearance and function of your smile. During your visit, Dr. Poppe will evaluate your specific concerns to determine if this approach can achieve the results you’re looking for.
Every smile is different, so timelines can vary. Some patients notice improvements within a few months, while others continue treatment for a year or more, depending on how much movement is needed. Staying consistent with your aligner schedule plays a major role in how efficiently your results develop.
Most patients switch to a new set of trays approximately every two weeks. Each new aligner is slightly adjusted to continue moving the teeth closer to their final positions. This steady progression is what allows the treatment to remain both effective and comfortable.
You may notice a sense of pressure when transitioning to a new set of aligners, especially during the first day or two. This is a normal part of the process and indicates that the trays are actively working. As they are made of smooth plastic and customized for your teeth, they tend to be less irritating than traditional orthodontic options.
One of the biggest advantages of this treatment is flexibility. Aligners are removed during meals, so there are no dietary restrictions to worry about. You can continue enjoying your usual foods, as long as you clean your teeth before placing the trays back in. This also makes brushing and flossing much easier compared to fixed appliances.
The process begins with a consultation to evaluate your smile and discuss your goals. Digital impressions are taken to design your custom treatment plan, ensuring each stage is tailored to your needs. From there, your aligners are created to begin your transformation.
